Facebook Messenger

Connect your Facebook Page so your AI agent replies automatically to every Messenger conversation. Customers who message your Page through Messenger — whether from Facebook, the Messenger app, or the Page's chat plugin — all get instant AI-powered responses.

Requirements

  • •A Facebook Page (not a personal Facebook profile).
  • •Admin or editor access to the Page in Meta Business Manager.
  • •The Page must have Messaging turned on in Page Settings.

Connecting via OAuth (recommended)

1

Open Deploy → Messenger

In your agent's left sidebar, click Deploy, then select the Messenger tab.
2

Click Connect with Facebook

This starts Meta's OAuth flow. Log in with the Facebook account that has admin access to your Page.
3

Grant permissions

AIChatVault requests pages_messaging and pages_manage_metadata permissions. Approve both.
4

Select your Facebook Page

Choose the Page whose Messenger inbox you want the agent to handle.
5

Connection confirmed

The page shows your Facebook Page name, Page ID, connection method, and status ("Live — Replying"). The agent is now active. AIChatVault also automatically registers a Get Started button on your Page's Messenger greeting so first-time visitors have an obvious way to start the conversation.
6

Test it

Send a message to your Facebook Page via Messenger. The agent should reply within seconds.

Manual connection (advanced)

You can also connect by entering credentials manually:

  • •Page ID — the numeric ID of your Facebook Page (found in Page Settings → About → Page ID).
  • •Page Access Token — a long-lived token generated in Meta's Graph API Explorer with pages_messaging and pages_manage_metadata permissions.
  • •Page name — optional display label to identify which Page is connected.

Submitting this form isn't just saving fields. AIChatVault calls the Meta API to verify the Page ID and token actually work together before anything is saved, then automatically subscribes your Page to the Messenger webhook and registers the Get Started button — the same setup OAuth does for you, just triggered from a pasted token instead of a login popup.

⚠️
Verification and webhook subscription are two separate steps, so it's possible for one to succeed and the other to fail. If the token checks out but the webhook subscription call fails, the integration is still saved with a status of "Page verified, but webhook subscription failed" — the connection exists but won't receive messages yet. Use "Check Connection" on the Connect tab to retry the subscription, or reconnect via OAuth.

If a manually connected integration stops working (token expired), you can update credentials using the Update Credentials form on the Connect tab — or simply reconnect via OAuth to replace the token automatically.

What the connected view shows

  • •Facebook Page name — the Page currently linked.
  • •Page ID — the Meta numeric identifier for the Page.
  • •Connection method — OAuth or Manual.
  • •Status — "Live — Replying" when active.
  • •Connected at — when the integration was first authorised.

Stats tab

The Stats tab shows:

  • •Messages received, AI replies sent, reply rate, and last message timestamp.
  • •A 14-day bar chart of daily Messenger volume.
  • •A paginated message log showing each conversation message and the agent's reply.

Rich media messages

Messenger conversations aren't limited to plain text. The agent also receives and processes images (described by AI), audio messages (automatically transcribed), video, shared files, location shares, and postback replies from quick-reply and menu buttons.

Inbox & human handoff

The Connect tab includes an Inbox listing every Messenger conversation, showing each one's handoff status so your team can see which conversations the AI is still handling and which have been escalated to a human. See Human Handoff for how escalation is configured.

Disconnecting Messenger

Click Disconnect on the Connect tab. The agent immediately stops replying to Messenger messages. Your message log and stats are preserved. To resume, reconnect via OAuth or re-enter manual credentials.

ℹ️
If your Meta app is in Development mode, only you and users added as App Testers in Meta's App Dashboard can interact with the agent via Messenger. Switch the app to Live mode in Meta's App Review settings to make it available to all Page visitors.
💡
Messenger conversations often start with intent-heavy messages like "I want to book an appointment", "Do you deliver to [city]?", or "What's included in the [product]?" Add Q&A pairs that anticipate these patterns. Because Q&A answers are always placed first in the retrieval context, these common questions get accurate, instant answers without the agent needing to search through longer documents.
